BINGO! A translated book awarded the Batchelder Award.
I looked up winners and couldn't go past
Cry heart, but never break by Glenn Ringtved; illustrated by Charlotte Pardi; translated from the Danish by Robert Moulthrop.
The illustrated Death is one we are familiar with - the hooded figure with a scythe.
But this Death is not one to be feared, but one with the circle of life.
