Favourite things Friday: Masco

I've talked about Masco before -m the value of specialist shops, and why we should support them.

Last week, the lesson was brought home to me.

Before Christmas I'd dropped in to show all the socks off and Masco Lady mentioned how nice it was to see a complete pattern for some of the yarn. The swatches they get don't always show that. So, I dropped off coloured photos, with yarn type specified, of the socks I'd knitted, so they could use them as a reference.

Last week, I dropped in to Masco during my lunch break - it was the in-between pay week, so no money to spend - but I'd just finished a pair of socks made with yarn they'd just brought in recently. And Masco Lady told me that if I saw her, or Masco Man, I would get a discount of my sock wool, to say thank you. Because I'm a good customer. I buy my wool from them (it's a rare month when I'm not down there :)), I show them what the yarn looks like when it's made, and I gave them the photos once I realised it would help.

Yep. Small, specialist shops - the kind you can built a relationship with - rock.

And, it's one of the things I really miss working in a big central library - that lack of community and regulars. The ones you put things aside for, when they come in, or put requests in for. Or ask about their families. You know the ones. (They're also the ones who make you goodies at Christmas.) I miss that.

Friday favs... Georgette Heyer

Yes, I love most of books, and I'm going to read more this year - particularly ones I haven't read before... However, I've just finished Jane Aiken Hodge's biography of her - The private world of Georgette Heyer - which is fascinating. This wee passage had me nodding in understanding. I would like to be about to have expensive taste - but I do my best.

There was nothing egalitarian about Georgette Heyer. She thought the labourer worthy of her hire. Working hard, expected to enjoy the fruits of her labours. She liked the elegances of life, earned them, and bought them. Their chambers were well, if sombrely, furnished; she dressed impeccable and expensive taste, with a penchant for huge hats and the very best handbags and shoes. (Arrow Books, 2006; pp 112-113.)

I love the fact they go all-out. I love the windows. And I really, really loved the ham Christmas lunch I had a couple of days ago with the Boss - the roast potatoes were amazing.

Food on a Friday: my ultimate comfort food

Rice Pudding
[from Edmonds Cookery Book - first edition recipe, with variations]
Serves 4 [I halve it and it serves me - but this is ultimate comfort food]


Ingredients:
5 Tb short grain rice
2 Tb sugar
3 cups milk
2 to 3 drops vanilla essence
¼ tsp nutmeg


Method:

Place rice and sugar in the bottom of an ovenproof dish.

Add milk and vanilla. Mix well.

Sprinkle nutmeg over the surface. [or grate fresh nutmeg - my preference!]

Bake at 150ºC for 2 hours, stirring two or three times in first hour.

OR: bake at 70ºC overnight, or all day.

Yes, on Saturday...
On nights with little to watch on TV, I've been watching Doctor Who episodes - mostly series three with David Tennant.
It reminded me of a discussion with a friend about our favourite episodes. Mine keep changing, depending on which one I've just watched!
I've previously said it was "Love and monsters". Also, very sad... However, I've just re-watched "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood". They are so sad. The Doctor is just human, with the possibility of love and family. And he has to give it up.
My friend voted for "The Girl in the Fireplace" as his most touching episode.

Scariest? "Blink" and "Silence in the Library" - the sequel to which has the sad bit of Donna just missing Lee.
